The Moon

The Moon was a short story that i found while looking through some old fairytales by the Brothers Grimm. Its a story about how the moon came to be in the sky. The book was rewritten (with a more modern wording) and illustrated by myself and printed through Blurb. I made sure to showcase the “Light” in the story, creating the characters and environments as silhouettes making sure that all the colors were those casted by the moon and the sun.

The Cover

I pulled a lot of inspiration from paper cutouts and shadow boxes as well as the short animation of the “Tale of Three Brothers” in the Harry Potter: Deathly Hollows movie. These inspirations as well as the cover set the tone for the rest of the book.

Sunsets

i wanted the first page to have a nice splash of color across it and felt what better way to do that then a sunset.

Clash of Lights and Color

I wanted any and all of the light sources to reflect and bounce off of the characters and environments to add a bit of texture to the silhouettes. This is one of my favorite spreads in the entire book.

Sunrise

I gave the sun all the power of color with both sunset and sunrise. I felt that these two time periods were a mix of night and day and that they would work well with the theme of “Light”

The Moon

I wanted the moon to alway cast a blue light every time it was featured on a page. I loved the idea of having the characters be enveloped by its light the closer they got to it in order to keep the silhouettes.

Party Like the Dead

I wanted the undead to be cute and adorable but keep the silhouette theme going. I also wanted an strange fog to roll onto each of the pages the were featured in as well as ghoulish, glowing music notes to give off that “Monster Mash” feel.
